What are dangerous goods?

Dangerous Goods constitute substances or articles with hazardous properties which may, if handled incorrectly:

	explode or make explosive mixtures
	asphyxiate
	burn
	eat metal or skin
	poison pollute the environment
	become unstable if mixed with other products

Why do we need laws for dangerous goods?

Handled incorrectly, dangerous goods can endanger people and/or the environment. To prevent this occurring, laws have been developed for the safe handling and transportation of dangerous goods. These laws set out rules, procedures and guidelines relating to the safe transport of dangerous goods. They include rules for everyone involved in the transport of these goods, plus penalties for those who do not follow the rules. In Queensland, the relevant law is the Transport Operations (Road Use Management - Dangerous Goods) Regulation 1998.

As noted above, everybody involved in the transportation of dangerous goods has particular responsibilities and rules relating to their role.

The SHIPPER must supply certain details about the goods, including :

	NAME
	CLASS and/or SUBSIDIARY RISK
	UN NUMBER
	NUMBER and TYPE OF PACKAGES SENT
	QUANTITY OF GOODS BEING SENT
